Trauma is a very common source of psychological problems and symptoms. Traumatic experiences can take many forms, ranging from single isolated incidents to recurrent or chronic episodes of victimization, neglect or abandonment. Sometimes it is clear to us what experiences were traumatic, but other times we do not consciously realize the impact of past or recent troubling events, and unprocessed memories continue to exert a powerful yet hidden influence on our lives.
Since 2001, Dr. Bonner has had extensive training in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), a research validated treatment for psychological trauma. Dr. Bonner has been particularly influenced by David Grand, Ph.D.’s innovative modifications of EMDR, called Natural Flow EMDR and Brainspotting. Natural Flow EMDR employs bilateral audio sound to help facilitate trauma processing. Building on the Natural Flow EMDR treatment protocol, Brainspotting utilizes specific visual focal points and eye positions to help identify, process, and release core neurophysiological sources and consequences of trauma and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting can help access and process unconscious material that has escaped the reach of the mind's usual cognitive and linguistic functions. Brainspotting can also be used to improve emotion regulation skills and to strengthen other positive inner resources.
